New Research on Smartphones and Teen Well-being

In partnership with

Every day my 9-year-old says he’ll finish his veggies if we buy him a phone or Apple Watch! (Why are all kids negotiators???) Of course, the chances of that happening are slim to none. Not until he’s 14! His persistent requests concern us; some of his friends already have phones and smart watches, and we all know the burgeoning effect of peer pressure and FOMO.

The question of when and how to introduce smartphones to our children has become a critical concern for many parents. Recent research and developments are shedding new light on this issue, and I wanted to share some interesting research findings with you. Warning: It’s a bit bleak, but, it’s true.

The Magic Number for Smartphones? Get the answer here đŸ˜‰

The Age of First Smartphone: A Critical Decision

A recent study by Sapien Labs has revealed a concerning trend: the younger a person acquires their first smartphone, the more likely they are to experience mental health challenges in adulthood.

🧠 18-24 year-olds who got smartphones later had better mental well-being.

đŸ“± Earlier smartphone acquisition correlated with increased suicidal thoughts, feelings of aggression, and sense of detachment from reality.

đŸ‘§đŸœ The effects were more pronounced in females.

Why might this be happening? Researchers suggest that smartphones may hinder the development of crucial social skills and bonds. Every year, children with smartphones might miss out on 1,000 to 2,000 hours of face-to-face social interactions. (Source: Sapien Labs)

Meta’s Response: Instagram Teen Accounts

In light of growing concerns, Meta has launched Instagram Teen Accounts, featuring:

  • Automatic migration of users under 16 to a more limited experience

  • Private profiles by default

  • Restricted messaging

  • Parental controls for monitoring communication and screen time

  • Age verification using ID cards and facial analysis

Schools Going Phone-Free

Last year, Jonathan Haidt wrote an article in The Atlantic that spoke about how phones impede learning, reduce the feeling of belonging, and stunt relationships. During his interaction with teachers, they noted clear links between rising phone addiction and declining mental health, and sadly, declining academic performance.

Schools across the country are recognizing the disruptive impact of smartphones:

  • Florida has banned student cellphone use during class time and blocked social media on district Wi-Fi.

  • Oklahoma, Vermont, and Kansas are considering similar "phone-free schools" legislation.

  • Educators report improved attention and reduced drama when phones are restricted.

What Can Parents Do?

Child development specialists recommend delaying smartphone acquisition until at least 8th grade. However, every family’s situation is unique. The key is to make informed decisions that balance the benefits of technology with your child’s well-being. Consider delaying smartphone acquisition for your child.

Consider these strategies:

  • Delay smartphone acquisition as long as feasible for your family situation but waiting until 8th Grade is highly recommended!

  • If your child already has a smartphone, implement parental controls and establish clear usage boundaries.

  • Prioritize and encourage face-to-face social interactions and outdoor activities.

  • Stay informed about and support your school's phone policies, including phone-free initiatives.

  • Model healthy smartphone habits yourself to set a positive example.
