Seeing the Unseen: Dads' Mental Health Matters Too

Plus: The Startling Data on Why Dads' Mental Health Matters

It’s Father’s Day on Sunday, and while some of us scramble to score the last-minute ideal Father’s Day gift, let’s talk of the unspoken topic of the parenting mental load - and how dads feel its impact on them is being overlooked.

We talk a lot about maternal mental health (as we absolutely should!). But, a recent survey has some eye-opening findings about the state of paternal mental health that we can’t ignore.

Dads are feeling under-appreciated

According to the Dads & Mental Health Study by Parents and Verywell Mind, a whopping 59% of the 1,600 father participants feel like they do more childcare and parenting then they get credit for. Let that number sink in. More than half of dads feel under-appreciated and unseen for all they contribute to their families.

Dads are expected to be the steadfast, immovable rocks in our mom-centric parenting culture. But the data reveals what many of us already knew deep down - our father heroes are human too. They’re bending under immense pressures, both internal and external.

Tips For Prioritizing Mental Health

🤝🏽 Stay connected: Engage in your communities as you navigate parenthood. Staying connected increases resources and support benefiting the whole family's mental health.

🗫 Talk about it: Don't internalize stressors alone. Open up to safe loved ones, join dad groups, or see a therapist. Expressing yourself models vulnerability for kids.

👟 Create healthy habits: Prioritize sleep, nutrition, exercise, and hydration. Caring for yourself gives you energy to be an active dad and role model.

For all our dad friends who’ve felt dismissed or diminished in your role - we see you. This Father’s Day, let’s normalize and uplift dads’ mental wellness. 💚
