Olympic Rings of Wisdom: 5 Golden Lessons for Your Kids

Getting into the Olympics Spirit!

Last Friday, my entire family was glued to the screen watching the incredible opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics! What was amazing to see was how many smaller countries were represented, countries we’d never heard of (it was almost a mini geography class for us!).

Our patriotic hearts swelled with pride as we watched the boat carrying the American athletes across the Seine. Led by flag bearers LeBron James and Coco Gauff, Team USA went down the River Seine in a boat with around 350 Olympians, more than half of the US delegation of 594 athletes!

As we watch the games underway, my boys are awestruck and starry-eyed as they watch sports heroes' dedication and hard work come to fruition. Watching the games with kids can teach them valuable life lessons. The Olympics are an excellent opportunity to reflect on the powerful messages and values that the Olympics can instill in young minds.

Five powerful lessons our kiddos can learn from those iconic Olympic rings!

🔵 The Power of Perseverance: Never Give Up!

Remember Simone Biles? This gymnastics superstar showed us that it’s okay to stumble, as long as you get back up. In 2021, she took a break for her mental health but came back stronger than ever.

🖤 Confidence: Believe in Yourself!

Sha’Carri Richardson, our track and field firecracker, owns her uniqueness like a champion. With her unshakeable self-belief, she teaches us that believing in yourself is important to achieve your goals.

🔴 Teamwork: Together We're Stronger!

The U.S. Women's Soccer Team consistently kicks goals and stereotypes. These players show us that passing the ball (and the spotlight) makes everyone a winner.

🟡 Spirit of Sportsmanship: Be a Good Sport!

Remember when Mutaz Barshim (Qatar) and Gianmarco Tamberi (Italy) decided to share the high jump gold in Tokyo 2020? That’s sportsmanship higher than any bar they could jump!

🟢 Pursuit of Excellence: Always Aim High!

Katie Ledecky doesn't just swim, she flies through water! With her relentless pursuit of breaking her own records, she shows us that our biggest competition is often ourselves.

Where to Watch the Olympic Magic

NBC is your go-to channel for all things Olympics! Catch the action on NBC, USA Network, or stream on Peacock. Don’t miss a single somersault or sprint!

A Fun Game by New York Times

How Fast Is That Going? The New York Times measured the speeds of eight objects to make their own Olympic game. Can you guess how fast the discus flies? An arrow? The badminton birdie?

And hey, while you're cheering on these incredible athletes, why not fuel your own family of champions? Our friends at Hungryroot have got your back!
